Classic Wallabies Bring Elite Rugby Experience to Gympie
Gympie rugby players are in for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as the Classic Wallabies and Classic Wallaroos head to town to run a high-energy skills clinic for local kids. This exciting event, open to all junior players regardless of club affiliation, will take place at Victory College, 173 Old Maryborough Road, Gympie, on Wednesday, 26 February 2025, from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM.
Rugby greats Morgan Turinui, Rod Davies, Annette Finch, and Selena Tranter will be on hand to share their expertise, inspire young athletes, and foster a love for the game.
Gympie Hammers Rugby Union Club President Sally Newman says the visit is a massive boost for rugby in the region.
“Having legends of the game like the Classic Wallabies and Wallaroos come to Gympie is an incredible opportunity for our young players. It’s not every day that kids in regional areas get to train with former internationals, and we know this event will leave a lasting impact,” Newman said.
But while the event is a highlight, it also underscores the challenges the club has faced in recent years. Since COVID-19 and the devastating 2022 floods that rendered Albert Park unplayable, the Gympie Hammers have been rebuilding without a permanent clubroom.
“Not having a clubhouse significantly hampers our ability to grow the sport in Gympie. A clubroom is more than just four walls—it’s a place for our teams to come together, for parents to connect, and for the club to host events that engage the community. Without it, we struggle to build the strong club culture that helps sustain and develop grassroots rugby,” Newman explained.
Despite these challenges, events like the Classic Wallabies clinic play a crucial role in strengthening the club and keeping the spirit of rugby alive in Gympie.
Junior rugby players of all skill levels are encouraged to register for this free event and take advantage of this incredible opportunity to learn from some of Australia’s best.
