SUNSMART POLICY

1. Purpose

Gympie Hammers Rugby Union Club is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all players, coaches, volunteers, and spectators. As part of this commitment, we recognise the importance of sun protection and aim to minimise the risks associated with overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This policy outlines measures to promote SunSmart practices at all Club activities.

2. Scope

This policy applies to all players, coaches, officials, volunteers, and spectators involved in Gympie Hammers Rugby Union Club activities, including training sessions, matches, and other Club events.

3. Sun Protection Measures

  1. Training and Game Scheduling:
    • Where possible, training sessions and games will be scheduled outside peak UV times (10 AM – 3 PM) to reduce exposure.
    • Shaded areas will be made available for players and spectators during breaks.
  2. Protective Clothing & Equipment:
    • Players, coaches, and volunteers are encouraged to wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses when not actively playing.
    • Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and UV-protective clothing are recommended for training sessions where practical.
  3. Sunscreen Use:
    • The Club will provide SPF 30+ (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen at training sessions, games, and events.
    • Players, coaches, and volunteers are encouraged to apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before outdoor activities and reapply every two hours or after heavy sweating.
  4. Hydration & Shade:
    • The Club will promote regular hydration and provide access to shaded areas where possible.
    • Pop-up tents or shade structures will be used at events and games when suitable permanent shade is not available.
  5. Education & Awareness:
    • SunSmart awareness will be promoted through Club communications, including newsletters, social media, and team briefings.
    • Coaches and team managers will reinforce the importance of sun protection with players and parents.
  6. Role of Parents & Guardians:
    • Parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure their children arrive at training and games with sunscreen applied and appropriate sun-protective clothing.
    • Families are encouraged to provide their own sunscreen and hats as additional protection.

4. Policy Review

This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure it remains effective and up-to-date with SunSmart guidelines. Feedback from Club members and updates from health authorities will be considered in any amendments.

By implementing this SunSmart Policy, Gympie Hammers Rugby Union Club aims to protect our players and community from the harmful effects of UV exposure and encourage lifelong sun-safe habits.
